Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has given a detailed assessment as to why the Anglo-Nigerian forward is deserving to start for the club.
The new season did not begin too well for Chelsea and Frank Lampard as they lost their first game miserably to Manchester United at Old Trafford and that was followed by a UEFA Super Cup defeat to Liverpool.
But things have finally started to look positively for the west London side as Chelsea recorded their first win of the season against Norwich City at Carrow Road last weekend. Young Tammy Abraham was at the heart of things for Chelsea as his brace confirmed the first of three points for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea career as a manager.
Abraham missed the decisive penalty against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul but showed his class against Norwich City with two fine goals. The 21-year-old striker has featured in all Chelsea games so far starting the last two.
Young England forward was in sublime for last season for Aston Villa as he scored 26 goals in 46 Championship games last season when on loan at Villa Park.
As Chelsea take on Sheffield United this weekend, Lampard was asked about Abraham’s maturity and the 41-year-old replied, “Really impressed. His character and how he dealt with the situation was brilliant in terms of Twitter and the nonsense I spoke strongly about it but he’s the one dealing with it first-hand. He’s the person who had to rise above it, which is not easy, and he certainly did that. He has this enthusiastic character, he’s a people person, the players love him. He trains with a smile on his face and has a work ethic. In terms of what I see from the outside in terms of how he’s reacted to that, and the competition of getting into the first XI, I can’t complain. It’s been brilliant. But going back to Mason and to young players, that must stay and improve all the time. Just about football. Two goals won’t make or break him. That has to be the start, and I have a feeling he’s that kind of character. He’s had a taste and he needs to push on because there’s competition upfront. I’m not playing young players for the sake of it. Tammy is playing at the moment because he deserves it, but he’ll have to continue deserving it.”
