A lot of Chelsea fans will be excused for forgetting that the midfielder is still at the club after van Ginkel’s time at Chelsea has been marred by a series of unfortunate injuries, the Dutch international was signed from Vitesse in 2013 for a reported 8 million pounds.
The midfielder started brightly under Mourinho but suffered an anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) injury that kept him out of play for around seven months and his Chelsea career has never recovered since that injury.
He was sent on loan to Milan the following season but missed large parts of the season due to various injuries.
On 10 July 2015, Van Ginkel joined Stoke City on loan for the 2015–16 season as part of a deal that saw goalkeeper Asmir Begović move to Chelsea for £8 million.his loan was canceled in the January transfer window and he was then sent on loan to PSV,
At PSV van Ginkel showed why he was so highly courted when he signed for Chelsea by scoring 29 goals in 58 appearances from midfield. He was even named captain of PSV despite being on loan from Chelsea, the midfielder looked like he was going to sign permanently at the club but his injury problems returned, On 10 July 2018, van Ginkel had an operation to reconstruct his anterior cruciate ligament and treat damage in his knee and expected to be out for around eight months, he was sent back to Chelsea after his loan spell came to an end.
Van Ginkel now 26 has been at the club since the start of last season and has still not recovered from injury. Chelsea who is heavily stocked in midfield with the likes of Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kante, Jorginho, Ross Barkley and Loftus-Cheek to return from injury is unlikely to give van Ginkel a route back and he will have to find another club once fit.
