Chelsea might have lost to the European Champions Liverpool who had beaten Spanish giants Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspurs before claiming the Champions League trophy last season. However, there is much to ponder as this match may have revealed a lot about both sides just at the start of the season. Chelsea’s loss means it is their second defeat in three days after the 4-0 thumping in the hands of rivals Manchester United.
But it’s obvious that the Chelsea young guns deserve a pat on the back as they showed character and desire to draw level in the extra time through Jorginho’s well-taken penalty. With Liverpool claiming the trophy we evaluate what we might have learned from the game on a significant note from Chelsea’s perspective.
Giroud Continues European Goalscoring Run
The French striker showed that irrespective of his weaknesses in body movement and flair coupled with the fact that age is not on his side that he’s got something to offer to Frank Lampard and his young guns this season.
This was evident as he started and scored for the Blues in the Super Cup match against Liverpool as he was picked ahead of Tammy Abraham who started against Manchester United on Sunday. Giroud has been on a fine run of form in Europe since last season and the Blues would hope he continues the feat even as the Champions League returns for Chelsea on 17th of next month (September).
Lampard’s Backing for His Players
Though Chelsea might have lost the Super Cup match against Liverpool one thing remains key to Chelsea’s season in the days ahead. The new Blues boss went all out to appreciate the performance of his players while also standing in encouragement to Tammy Abraham who missed the decisive penalty which handed Liverpool the trophy.
Lampard admitted that anybody can miss a penalty even as this was necessary for the young striker (Tammy) which had raised eyebrows relative to Romelu Lukaku’s penalty miss in the same stage. Belgian forward Lukaku was in the same scenario in 2013 when Chelsea faced Bavarian giants Bayern Munich.
Lampard’s comment is a brave one and this should be commended as negative talks may hamper the players (Tammy’s) progress in the season while also creating the overall room for all players to impress and flourish along in the campaign.
