Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Christopher Nkunku is close to making his comeback after a long period of injury absence.
The French star joined the Stamford Bridge side in a £52 million transfer from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window.
Unfortunately, he has been sidelined due to a serious knee injury sustained during a pre-season match against Borussia Dortmund.
Initially, there were concerns that Nkunku might not return to action until at least December, but Pochettino’s recent statements indicate a more optimistic timeline.
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has been dedicated to his recovery process, and the manager suggested that he might make his return to the team following the forthcoming international break. While talking to Chelsea’s official website, Pochettino said:
“He is doing really, really well. He is working really hard. I think it’s really, really close, and as soon as possible, we can have him involved again in the game. He is a really important player for us.”
Nkunku was expected to have a significant role in Chelsea’s season, alongside Nicolas Jackson, and he displayed his skills during the preseason with two goals and two assists.
His injury during the Dortmund match was a disappointment for the fans who were eagerly awaiting his competitive debut. However, there is now great excitement at the club as the French star gets closer to returning to the field.

The Blues are currently enjoying a period of improved form, and the timing of his comeback could be crucial in sustaining this positive trend. Nkunku’s skills in playmaking and goal-scoring will add extra energy to the club’s already strong team.
Pochettino also mentioned that Reece James is included in the squad to face Brentford, but it might be too soon for the English international to be in the starting lineup.
James came off the bench in the 2-2 draw against Arsenal and is expected to have a similar role this weekend.
