The Blues central defender David Luiz has stated that he is still unsure about his future at Stamford Bridge after scoring a brilliant header to seal the win against Manchester City.
Chelsea fans had every right to celebrate deep into Saturday night as the West London outfit became the first club to defeat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in this season’s Premier League campaign. A 2-0 win was enough to secure all three points as goals from N’golo Kante and David Luiz delighted manager Maurizio Sarri as his side also managed to keep a clean sheet against the rampant City attack.
The Italian boss had plenty of praise for his players and David Luiz as well, who confirmed the victory with a superb looping header in the 78th minute of the game. The Brazilian centre-back was also crucial at the back as he enjoyed a relatively easy outing coming up against a City side without Kevin De Bruyne or Sergio Aguero.
Luiz has just a few months left on his Chelsea contract which expires in the summer and despite his successful past with the club; he is not guaranteed a contract extension. Chelsea does have a policy of usually offering their players over 30 a one-year contract extension and Luiz now fits the bracket at 31 years of age.
News outlet Goal reported Luiz stating that he loves the club and wants to stay, but negotiations have not yet reached a mutual agreement point, “I am just trying to enjoy myself like I do every single day. Then, for sure, we will do the best thing for me, for Chelsea, for everybody. We are still talking, let’s see. Let’s see what the future brings. I love this club, everybody knows I want to stay.”
Luiz has been a long-term servant at Chelsea and it would only be fair that he is granted at least a one-year contract extension. But the club is aware that Luiz has a tendency of making errors in crucial games and has had shaky performances this season as well.
