Former Liverpool defender Stevie Nicol is not impressed by Chelsea spending an eyewatering sum of £120 million on signing Enzo Fernandez.
The west London giants are set to break the Premier League transfer record to land the Benfica midfield talent who has been courted by some of the biggest clubs across Europe following his stellar displays at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Nicol while speaking to ESPN, however, appears unimpressed with the fee rumoured to be shelled out by the Stamford Bridge camp to sign the 21-year-old Fernandez despite the latter’s growing stock in the transfer market.
“Am I the only person that’s thinking ‘what’s wrong with Chelsea?’ You are going to spend £120m on Fernandez? Am I the only person thinking that? £120m?
“He’s a hot property? Gakpo’s a hot property. Liverpool got him for £37m and he scores goals. I am sorry, Fernandez had a great World Cup and he’s a good player.
“But £120m? When your problems and struggles are going forward, I think they have everything upside down. You are going to waste £120m.
“Their problems are going forward and Fernandez is going to do nothing for you going forward. Am I the only one that thinks £120m is crazy for this guy?”
Nicol’s remarks come amid suggestions that Chelsea would be better off dipping into the market for a new attacker to bolster the front line options at Graham Potter’s disposal after a run of timid displays up front.
Chelsea had spent big last summer on bringing in Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but the duo have faltered to put out consistent displays week in and week out for their new side.
