The home side got the game underway on the front foot but were unable to trouble the Wolves goalie Jose Sa until the quarter-hour when Jorginho’s strike forced the former into action.

On the other end of the pitch, Chelsea stopper Kepa, starting in place of Edouard Mendy, palmed Joao Moutinho’s free-kick from a dangerous position to safety.

Mount and Loftus-Cheek both came close to scoring while it was Pulisic who had the best chance to find the back of the net only for the American’s strike to be denied by Sa.

Chelsea had to extend their wait for the opener until the last embers of the first period with Kai Havertz looping a header over Sa and under the crossbar to make it 1-0 for the hosts heading into the break.

Graham Potter’s men started the second half with equal aplomb and Pulisic made amends for his earlier miss by lifting his finish over Sa after Mason Mount had teed up his attacking partner.

The Blues boss Potter rang in changes from the bench with the likes of Kovacic, James and Broja coming on and it would be the latter who would finish off the scoring for Chelsea in the 89th minute with a well-taken shot past Sa.
