The visitors looked the stronger of the two teams early on even as Southampton piled upon the pressure with Mohamed Elyounoussi’s effort calling Chelsea stopper Mendy into action

Raheem Sterling, following his two-goal showing last weekend, was once again the main man for his side with the summer arrival teed up by Mason Mount to find the back of the net for the opening goal.

Chelsea’s lead, however, lasted only for five minutes with Southampton’s Lavia smashing an unstoppable shot back past Mendy to level the scoreline.

Just before the break, Southampton made the most of Chelsea’s defensive errors with Adam Armstrong’s shot catching a deflection and going past Mendy to make it 2-1 for the home side.

Thomas Tuchel rang in changes from the bench with Mateo Kovacic coming on while wing-back Cucurella had to be in the right place to deny Elyounoussi from adding to his side’s advantage.

Southampton continued to create trouble for the Chelsea players in the dying moments of the game with the Blues struggling to find the coveted goal to salvage something from their travels.
