The home side were on the back foot for the majority of the first half with David de Gea stepping up to bail his side out on a number of occasions.
An ambitious effort from Reece James was kept out by the United shot-stopper inside the opening minutes of the game with another strike, this time from Kai Havertz, unable to trouble De Gea.
Havertz went close with a header in the 36th minute but De Gea stood his ground to deny the Chelsea forward who had a great chance to score from point-blank range.
The second period saw a dominant Chelsea side create trouble for the United backline and it was Marcos Alonso who broke the deadlock with Havertz setting up the former with a deflected header.
United, however, responded back in style with Cristiano Ronaldo the man to tuck home after the midfield man Matic chipped a gorgeous ball over to the dangerman.
The Portuguese could have doubled his tally for the game but Mendy had other plans as he kept out Ronaldo’s effort to ensure that his side salvaged a point from the outing.
