The defending champions of Europe Chelsea play hosts to Russian side Zenit in the opening game of the 2021-22 Champions League campaign for both sides this Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel’s men recorded a convincing win last time around when welcoming Dean Smith’s Aston Villa to their patch and will be hoping for a similar result in the upcoming midweek contest as well.
Let us now have a look at how Thomas Tuchel might set up his Chelsea side on Wednesday –
3-4-2-1
Kepa is not likely to get a look in for the starting teamsheet with Tuchel expected to continue with Edouard Mendy in goal on the back of his fine run of displays.
The backline could see some tinkering around with Reece James in line to earn a recall after sitting out the last game owing to suspension.
James coming back into his right wing-back role could also open the door for the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen to be included amongst the eleven.
Last weekend’s debutant Saul Niguez will be dropping down to the bench to make way for Italy international Jorginho while N’Golo Kante remains an injury concern for Chelsea.
A recall could also be on the cards for Timo Werner who has been on the bench in recent games for Chelsea with new boy Romelu Lukaku leading the line.
