Manchester City 1-2 Chelsea Match Report | Premier League 20-21

Chelsea moved into third place in the Premier League table as the west London giants secured a pivotal win over table-toppers Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel’s men came from behind to stage the victory against City who had taken the lead in the first half through Raheem Sterling before Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso got on the scoresheet to help their side claim all three points.

Manchester City enjoyed the early bulk of the possession share and registered the first effort on goal through Ferran Torres which did not trouble Chelsea goalie Mendy at the least.

Chelsea thought that they had gone ahead through Timo Werner around the half-hour mark with the German slotting the ball past Ederson into the back of the net but his strike was ruled out as he was adjudged to be in an offside position.

Both teams sought to amp up their attacking prowess but it was the hosts who drew first blood when Raheem Sterling was set up by Sergio Aguero to open the scoring despite Chelsea’s protests to stop the play with Christensen down injured.

Just before the half-time whistle, the hosts got an opportunity to double their advantage with Gabriel Jesus being brought down in the box by Billy Gilmour and Aguero stepped up to take the spot-kick but his weak Panenka effort was defied rather easily by Mendy.

Following the commencement of play the Blues looked rather comfortable on the ball at the attacking end and this bore fruit through Hakim Ziyech’s driving effort levelling the scoreline.

With a couple of Chelsea efforts being flagged offside, the Blues were understandably frustrated as the clock ticked into stoppage time where Marcos Alonso made himself a hero by sweeping the ball past a helpless Ederson to put the match to bed in Chelsea’s favour and take all three points.
