Chelsea’s left-back, Marcos Alonso has found himself again in the manager’s plan after spending almost half of the season on the sidelines. In Frank Lampard’s reign, Alonso hardly got any playing time and was kept out in the cold. He was down the pecking order as well and it seemed that an exit from the club is of matter’s time.
However, the new coach has since implemented a back three formation, Marcos Alonso has been delivering great performances. Quite understandably, the system is suiting him very well and Tuchel has laid confidence in him as well.
Antonio Conte brought the best out of the Spaniard in his Premier League winning run and Richard believes that Tuchel can implement a similar thing as well. The Spanish defender has still a lot to offer to the Blues, he thinks.
‘When I played with him at Fiorentina he could play as one of those in a three at the back or as one of the wing-backs,’ the former Manchester City defender said on BBC Sport, which was also repeated in the Metro.
‘I like him in this position, the wing-back role because he always gets into these areas (the penalty area) causing havoc.’
‘He has the composure to bring it down, one touch, two touch and the third one puts it in the back of the net,’ Richards added about Alonso’s goal against Burnley. Under Tuchel, he will be a vital player, because he can play in so many positions.’
Alonso has already made his return with a superb goal from a volley as he popped up just outside the penalty box. That goal against Burnley even won him the goal of the month as well.
Richards is of the opinion that he is an important piece of Tuchel’s team. He has the ability to play in any position in the backline due to his versatility.
