Chelsea’s young midfielder, Mason Mount reflects on their disappointing 3-1 defeat against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Lampard and his team know that they need to improve a lot in order to take three points from Aston Villa.
Aston Villa has won their last match 3-0 against Crystal Palace and they are soaring high in confidence and have moved up the table overtaking the Blues.
Mason Mount knows that and has opened up on the team’s lacklustre display against the Gunners. He was one of the few who had a decent game. The only time Chelsea went near to the goal apart from the penalties was due to his efforts.
‘It is probably better we have that quick turnaround because now we look at another game. The Arsenal one is gone, there are still big things we need to work on but now we have that one day before our next game and we can put it in the back of our heads and really go into Villa with a strong mindset, starting the game very well and hopefully doing well in the game,’ said Mount in the Offical Chelsea website.
‘It is something where we need to look at ourselves as players,’ he says. ‘We didn’t start the game anywhere near what we should be. We are representing Chelsea, we’re a big club and we really need to look at ourselves as players and say that was not good enough. We know that, it is a big London derby and we need to start the game way better than we did.
‘We have to be harsh on ourselves. We can’t start a game like that and expect not to be 2-0 down at half-time. It is a tough lesson and we need to learn that and we need to do better the next time.’
‘At 2-0 down at half-time, especially against a team like this, it is difficult to get back in it so we just had to come out and work hard and run and tackle. I thought we did that, we came close, but when you are 2-0 down and then they get a third, the game is kind of done by then.’
The defeat on Boxing Day means that Chelsea has lost three games out of their last four in the Premier League and have they won them all, the Blues could have been on the summit easily.
Mount admits that the performance they produced was nowhere to be near what they have been delivering in the past months.
The Blues are one position down to Aston Villa having played two games more. It is a golden chance for Aston Villa to enter into the top two if they get some back to back victories and undoubtedly they will try hard not to waste that opportunity.
Chelsea meanwhile cannot taste another defeat else they will go to the bottom half of the Premier League table that Frank Lampard and the fans cannot afford to have.
