Everton 1-0 Chelsea | Edouard Mendy’s error gave Carlos Ancelotti a massive win

Chelsea lost to Everton 1-0 at Goodison park and their unbeaten 17 games in all competitions came to an end. The defeat proved costly to Lampard as his side missed the opportunity to top the Premier League group. Hakim Ziyech’s absence, due to the injury he is recovering from, was thoroughly felt in this game.

The only goal of the match was scored by Gylfi Sigurdsson when he netted home from the spot-kick in just the 22nd minute of the game. Everton earned the penalty when Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy made an error by fouling Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton striker, Calvert-Lewin challenged Thiago Silva that made the ball bouncing in the penalty area. Mendy rushed in to clear the ball by getting his foot to it but instead, he struck with Calvert-Lewin. The referee made no mistake by giving Carlos Ancelotti’s men a penalty.

Chelsea’s best chances to get back in the game came in the form of Reece James but he was twice denied by Jordan Pickford. Chelsea dominated the game and showed urgency to score a goal in the second half but was unable to break Everton’s four-man defence.

Another penalty was given to Everton before it was ruled out by VAR in the second half. One goal for Carlos Ancelotti’s side was enough to clinch victory although Mason Mount fired a great shot from the free-kick in the dying minutes of the game that beat Pickford but didn’t get into the net.

It was only Lamaprd’s second defeat of the campaign since he last lost to Liverpool in September and Spurs in the Carabao Cup tie-breaker.
