Chelsea have had a great start to their campaign, both in the Premier League and the Champions League after a summer of good business. The Blues have finally settled into a good stable side under Frank Lampard, who looks to improve on a daily basis as a coach. This weekend in the Premier League, Chelsea travel to the blue half of Merseyside, as they look to take the attack to Everton.
Frank Lampard has a fully fit Chelsea squad at his disposal and the return of young Billy Gilmour is encouraging. Everton have had a slump in form ever since the international break as they failed to capitalize on a great start. Chelsea will be set up in a very aggressive style as Lampard loves taking the attack to the opposition.
Let us now have a look at how Frank Lampard might set his Chelsea side up against his former boss Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton.
THE 4-3-3
The 4-3-3 is a system and formation that has been used extensively by Frank Lampard this season after the huge summer the club had with all the players coming in. Everton are a very attacking side with Calvert-Lewin scoring the chunk of their goals thus Chelsea will have to be very careful at the back. Thiago Silva has led the side very well despite not speaking English a lot and has also improved Zouma with him.
The midfield has been revamped for the Blues this season with N’Golo Kante returning to his best in the defensive midfield spot. Havertz, despite being a forward play has done very well in the midfield three for the Londoners since coming this summer. Kovacic has continued his good run of form from last season and has cemented his place in the Chelsea side.
Olivier Giroud has quickly turned from a bench warmer into a goalscoring hero for Chelsea in the last couple of weeks.
THE 4-2-3-1
The 4-2-3-1 is another formation Lampard has used very well since the last season as Chelsea have a lot of capable attacking players. With two of Kante, Kovacic and Jorginho, Chelsea will have a strong midfield pivot to build the game from who can rotate the ball with ease. The double-pivot will also allow Chilwell and Reece James to join their respective wingers in the attack.
Frankl Lampard and Chelsea have a lot of options to choose from in the attacking third of the pitch with all the recruits this summer. The mere presence of Werner, Pulisic, Havertz and Ziyech will be enough to cause morale damage to the opposition, never mind when they click on the pitch together. But it is unlikely for Lampard to play all four together as none of them is a pure centre-forward.
THE 3-4-3
The 3-4-3 is the only other system Lampard has used at Chelsea, but the former Chelsea star has only used it in big games and tough oppositions. But it is unlike for him to use it against Everton, especially when they are in a slump and are struggling to churn out victories. It will be expected of Chelsea to win the game but they will need to fight for the points.
