Chelsea’s expensive winger, Kai Havertz has opened up on how his German compatriot, Timo Werner texted him almost daily in order to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge.
German striker, Timo Werner completed a transfer deal of £50million for a move to the West London club from RB Leipzig and Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen in this summer transfer window making him the expensive player.
The striker was hoping Havertz to join the Blues and the delay in agreeing on a proposal by both the clubs made Timo Werner anxious. He repeatedly messaged him to assure that Havertz does come to the new club he has joined.
But time revealed that it didn’t require much convincing to get Havertz as he was himself keen to join. He signed a contract of five years with the Blues.
Havertz revealed the friendship he has with Werner and how players who communicate in the same language have made it easy to adapt to the new club.
‘It helped a lot. We know each other well from the national team. We’ve always been big friends. When I got the news that he would change [clubs] of course we messaged like every day.’
‘He always said to me, “come, come [to Chelsea]!” It was like every day’
‘Of course, it’s easier for me to have some German-speaking players here. We have Timo, Toni Rudiger and Pulisic and Kovacic can also speak German which is good for me.’
‘But I can speak English as well so I have a good relationship with every player but of course, I and Timo are big friends and it was very important for me that he made the step and I made it too,’ he said to Chelsea’s YouTube channel.
Kai Havertz has missed a number of games this season as he tested positive in the COVID test. He bagged a perfect hattrick in the initial months of joining against Burnley in the Carabao Cup but then his health problems and fierce competition has made him somewhat forgotten in the starting XI.
