Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are back in the Champions League after a good international break for the players of the club squad. Chelsea are in fine form and seem to get better with the progressing season, with players gelling into the team better by each passing day. The Blues visit France tomorrow to face Rennes as they look ton continue their winning streak in all competitions.
Lampard seems to finally get his best starting XI now, even with the injuries to Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic. With the re-emergence of Kante and Kovacic, Jorginho also seems to have lost his place in the Chelsea starting lineup despite a great start to the season. Lampard might chop and change his side against Rennes tomorrow though and give chances to some of the fringe players.
Let us now have a look at how Frank Lampard might set his Chelsea side up against Rennes in the Champions League.
THE 4-3-3
The 4-3-3 has been used to great effect by Frank Lampard, especially after N’Golo Kante has shown how good he still is. The Frenchman allows the other midfielders to go around the pitch and do their job offensively whereas he sweeps the midfield. Thiago Silva will be expected to come back to the starting lineup after being rested in the Premier League game against Newcastle.
Jorginho might also get a start in the Champions League if Lampard will want to keep his midfield fresh. All three of Mount, Kovacic and Kante have played a lot of game lately and thus they might do well with a break. Havertz might also have a cameo role to play for Chelsea as Lampard hinted about the German international’s return in the Champions League against Rennes.
Callum Hudson-Odoi also might also have a part to play tomorrow as he has been limited to the bench for most parts of this season so far.
THE 4-2-3-1
Lampard used the 4-2-3-1 very well last season, as Kante and Kovacic worked great when they play in a double pivot. Both the players complement each other very well and also allow the likes of James and Chilwell to bomb forward and join the attack and help in it. In such a formation, Havertz or Mount are likely to play in the No. role.
Ziyech and Werner are almost a surety in the starting lineup tomorrow in the Champions League but their positions is still in doubt as both the play can play in multiple positions. The defence is very likely to be as mentioned above as it is Chelsea’s strongest back four. This system can be used as a very offensive formation with almost six players in the attack.
THE 3-4-3
The 3-4-3 has been used by Lampard in some of the bigger games but it is highly unlikely for him to use it tomorrow against the likes of Rennes. Chelsea will be expected to win the game handsomely with the other two formations rather than the 3-4-3. Rennes will be careful about facing such a system though as it can be used as an ultra-attacking system.
