How will Lampard set up his Chelsea side against Newcastle United? | EPL 2020-21

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side are back in the Premier League after a long and tiring international break for the Blues’ players. Lampard’s men face Steve Bruce’s Newcastle away from home as Lampard looks to get Chelsea going in the Premier League. Chelsea are doing very well in the Premier League as Lampard looks to add three more points to the tally.

Luckily for Lampard and Chelsea, the squad hasn’t endured any new injuries during the international break, unlike other top teams in the league. Billy Gilmour and Christian Pulisic will be out of the game at Tyne side, but the rest of the squad is fit and ready to go. Chelsea will be expected to win the game with ease but you just never know in the Premier League.

Let us now have a look at how Frank Lampard might set his Chelsea side up against Newcastle this weekend.

THE 4-3-3

The 4-3-3 has been very successfully used by Frank Lampard who will be on top of the league table with a win against Newcastle. With Pulisic injured, Lampard has used the pace and directness of Werner on the left flank which has helped the team massively. On the right flank, Ziyech has started showing his magic and Lampard would like to see more of it against Newcastle.

The defence has been very strong and disciplined since the arrival of Mendy, as the shot-stopper has done very well between the sticks. Thiago Silva might not speak English, but the Brazilian surely knows how to lead his team and organize a defence. Zouma still looks a little unstable, but he has been much better with Thiago Silva playing alongside him.

The full-backs have also been excellent for Lampard, with their attacking side being used at an optimum level in Chelsea’s 4-3-3 system.

THE 4-2-3-1

The 4-2-3-1 system is very similar to that of the 4-3-3 but here, with Kante, Kovacic is likely to play in a deeper role. All three of N’Golo Kante, Matteo Kovacic and Mason Mount have had a great international break, where they have played extremely well. Frank Lampard will be hoping that his midfielders will replicate their international performances in the weekend against Newcastle as well.

Timo Werner also looks to be in good form, but the German will need to score more goals in order to prove his price tag. Tammy Abraham is likely to get a rare opportunity to start in the Premier League and will be expected to be amongst the goals for Chelsea. The 4-2-3-1 is a balanced system and will help Chelsea stay protected from the pace Newcastle have on top, with Wilson and Saint-Maximin.

THE 3-4-3

The 3-4-3 is the only system Lampard has used at Chelsea, but he only uses it against stronger oppositions who have a good attack. Newcastle lack attacking threat and this might system might be useless against a team of Newcastle’s size. Lampard will be expected to use a more extravagant system as Bruce will go with a defensive formation to stop Chelsea from scoring.
