Chelsea have been in fine form lately, both in the Premier League and Champions League, as they play host to Rennes later tonight. The Blues of Chelsea will be confident after their recent performances and goalscoring prowess as Lampard will look to get the same even tonight. There might a few changes from last time around as Lampard might look to give rest to some of his players.
The likes of Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham might have it to the starting XI as the injury to Pulisic might instigate a change in the lineup. Rennes are without a lot their star players, as Camavinga and Rugani will all miss the game due to injuries. It should be an easy game for Lampard’s men, but as seen earlier, Chelsea can implode.
Let us now have a look at how Lampard might lineup his Chelsea side against Rennes later tonight in the Champions League.
THE 4-3-3
This might be a good lineup against Rennes as Lampard uses his 4-3-3 to great effect with his inverted wingers and attacking full-backs. The defence is likely to be the same with Thiago and Zouma at the heart of the defence as both look good together. The inclusion of Mendy has also stabilized Chelsea’s defence, as he has been fantastic for the Blues in between the sticks.
Jorginho has done very well this season, as he has been the playmaker for Lampard’s Chelsea, with all the attacking flair up front. Alongside Jorginho in the midfield, it is expected of Lampard to field Mount and Kovacic, as both the midfielders will look to cement their places in the Chelsea side. Kovacic hasn’t played a lot this season, even if he was the club’s best player of last season, and will look to impress Lampard yet again.
Tammy Abraham and Hudson-Odoi have a good chance of starting tonight, with the injury to Christian Pulisic.
THE 4-2-3-1
The 4-2-3-1 was used by Frank Lampard a lot last season and has used it this season as well, with several great players in the squad. In such a system, in the double pivot, Jorginho is likely to start with Matteo Kovacic, as the Croatian drives the team forward and can also protect the back-four. The full-backs will play a great role in such a system as they will have the license to go forward and support in attack.
Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech might have to play in such a system, as the German is great in the central attacking midfield role. Whereas, Hudson-Odoi and Ziyech will play as inverted attacking midfield role, with Tammy Abraham acting as the focal point in the Chelsea side.
THE 3-4-3
Lampard has used the 3-4-3 in big games when he is under pressure to grind out a result against the bigger sides. Thus, it is unlikely for Chelsea to use this system against Rennes, who are already without their star players. The Blues will be expected to win the game fairly easily and keep on their good run of form.
