Jorginho has taken on additional responsibility in the Chelsea dressing room to aid new summer signing, Thiago Silva to learn key footballing terms in the English language.
Chelsea coach, Frank Lampard added the veteran defender to his squad after his move from the French club, Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer this summer.
The 36-year-old central defender of Brazil doesn’t speak English yet so Chelsea’s defensive midfielder, Jorginho has been doing everything he can to ensure Silva settles in his new club and around his new teammates comfortably. The Brazilian-born Italy international has taught Thiago several footballing terms that can help in the games while defending.
‘I have taught him “man on”, “turn” or, if he is on the other side, “switch play. Things that you need on the pitch. “Man on”, “drop” or “up”.’
‘We try to help each other. That’s what you do on and off the pitch. He is happy here. He is a big personality, a big player with lots of experience. He is helping all of us as a group, the younger players, everyone,’ said Jorginho as per the Official Chelsea site.
Jorginho also said that despite not having a grasp of English, Thiago can still get his points across in the games or in the training sessions.
‘He finds a way to communicate, whether it is with his hands or he speaks to me and I give the information to the other guys. We find a way.
‘When he has some questions or some doubts he asks me and I try to help him if I can, because my English is not that great.’
‘We are trying to be a solid team, not conceding goals. Details can make the difference: being aggressive, defending inside the box, how to press, 50/50 balls, not switching off on set plays.’
‘We need to be aware all the time and we are trying to do that. We are on the right way,’ he added.
Chelsea has started out with a bit shaky and inconsistent performance in this season after Lampard spent a hefty amount to overhaul his squad entirely. He brought the attacking trio of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, and Kai Havertz and it is his attack that is saving his matches.
The problem in defence is still plaguing and that has put Chelsea in the eighth position of the Premier League table after five games. Lampard’s men will face Manchester United in their away game after having a 3-3 draw at home with Southampton after twice throwing away a two-goal lead.
