Mason Mount is having an incredible year as he has managed to remain as a key player for both his club and the country. England international has been a favourite of Lampard although he has been in good form lately.
The 21-year-old has been a regular starter for Lampard’s Chelsea since he broke into the senior team in the previous season under Frank Lampard who was having his debut season as a manager. He featured in more than 50 games for the west London club last term and scored seven foal sin the Premier League while completed five assists to his name.
Mount impressed during his spell as a loanee at Derby County. The midfielder played a crucial role for his team to get in the Championship play-off final under the current Chelsea manager. Mount has been called into the starting XI consistently this season too which has sparked some debate on Lamaprd’s favouritism.
The England international has been playing regularly this season despite a huge competition in the team. Players have been considering a move outside due to lack of game time but that hasn’t been the case for Mason Mount. Instead, he repaid trust to coach Lampard by scoring an incredible goal during the 3-3 comeback against West Brom.
Although Mount had a rare absence during Chelsea clash with Crystal Palace in the Premier League which the Blues won 4-0, he was called up by Gareth Southgate to the England squad. There he got the opportunity to play all the three international matches.
He started both against Belgium and Denmark in the Nations League. He linked up brilliantly with his club mate Reece James to score the opener. Despite the performances, the situation hasn’t gone well with the people which includes the Chelsea fans as well.
They deny to give any credit for performance and accuse of favouritism on Mason Mount. This became more intense when the Aston Villa talented star, Jack Grealish was placed on the bench over Mason Mount. Fans were furious at the England coach’s treatment as Grealish has been in red hot form in this Premier League currently. His performance inspired Aston Villa to hammer Liverpool 7-1 just a few weeks ago.
It was hard to believe that Grealish was sidelined over Mount despite his man of the match performance against Wales. There is certainly a question mark whether the decision was right or not but Mount’s featuring shouldn’t be under too much debate.
Mount doesn’t get due credit for what he does on the pitch. His off the ball work-rate is very underrated which is rarely picked up on the television. the main reason Lampard like splaying Mount is his ability to press the opponent continuously. He has tremendous energy to press which he carried all the way across the whole last season.
In modern football, this unique trait is what most coaches prefer nowadays. Chelsea coach loves this especially, as his main aim always remains to suffocate the opponent by immense depressing in the final third area.
This remains a key part of Lampard’s plan and Mount’s defensive positioning becomes vital for the team’s stability. Although it will be very interesting to see where Lampard plays Mount as Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic is back to be on the starting XI for Chelsea in the next match.
It will be impossible to put Mount out wide in the game and these attacking stars are hard to be benched. But still, Mount will remain a part of Frank Lampard’s squad and will surely get minutes more than his fellow compatriots.
It is a long league and rotating players will be the ideal to win big in every competition out there for the club.
